What We Cover

01
eSIM Technology Explained
From the GSMA specification to practical activation—we explain how eSIM actually works, not how carriers want you to think it works.
02
European Roaming Reality
EU roaming rules are powerful but misunderstood. We cut through the marketing language to explain what you're actually entitled to—and what you're not.
03
Device Compatibility Truth
Not all eSIM implementations are equal. We document the real-world differences between device manufacturers and what they mean for travelers.
04
Digital Nomad Strategies
Long-term European connectivity requires a different approach than a two-week vacation. We cover the strategies that actually work for extended stays.

eSIM Fundamentals

TECH_01
The Embedded SIM
A chip soldered to your device's motherboard. Stores carrier profiles as encrypted software. Cannot be physically removed or lost. Governed by GSMA SGP.22 specification.
TECH_02
Profile Activation
QR code encodes server address and activation credentials. Device downloads encrypted profile over secure TLS connection. Profile installs in 2–5 minutes. One-time use per code.
TECH_03
Dual SIM Operation
Most modern devices support simultaneous eSIM + physical SIM. Home number stays active for calls. European eSIM handles data. No missed calls, no extra hardware.
TECH_04
EU Roaming Framework
RLAH regulation: EU subscribers pay no extra within EU/EEA. Applies to home carrier plans only. Third-party eSIM plans have separate terms. Switzerland, UK, Turkey not covered.
TECH_05
Coverage Reality
4G LTE covers most urban areas across Europe. Rural coverage varies significantly. 5G expanding in major cities. Mountains and tunnels create predictable dead zones.
TECH_06
Security Architecture
eUICC is a tamper-resistant secure element. Profiles encrypted end-to-end. Stronger protection against SIM-swapping than physical SIMs. EID ties profile to specific hardware.

Direct Answers

Why should I trust AiroeSIM over carrier websites?
We have no financial relationship with any carrier. Our analysis is not influenced by commercial considerations. We call out limitations and problems as readily as we explain benefits. Carrier websites are marketing materials; we are an independent editorial resource.
What is the most common eSIM mistake travelers make?
Forgetting to enable Data Roaming after activation. The eSIM profile installs successfully, but without Data Roaming enabled in device settings, it cannot connect to the network. This is the single most common cause of "my eSIM doesn't work" complaints.
Are eSIM plans more expensive than physical SIM cards?
For short trips, eSIM plans are often competitively priced with airport SIM cards and significantly more convenient. For longer stays, local physical SIM cards from national carriers typically offer better value. The convenience premium of eSIM is most justified for short, multi-country trips.
Can I use eSIM in the UK after Brexit?
Yes, eSIM technology works in the UK. However, the UK is no longer covered by EU roaming regulations, so EU-based eSIM plans may not include UK coverage, or may charge differently for UK usage. Check your specific plan's UK coverage before traveling there.
